10 things to learn from the almighty WWW today:

mental_floss Blog » 15 Film Production Credits Explained

Ever wonder what all those strange credits are when they roll by at the end of a film? I used to, until I moved to LA, where I started meeting Best Boys and Dolly Grips with their kids when I took my son to the playground—yes, Hollywood, where you meet Gaffers and Armourers at your average Saturday night house party.

So I started asking questions, and here’s what I’ve learned:

In India, Hand That Rocks the Cradle Also Calls the Shots – NYTimes.com

Relationships are changing rapidly in modern, urbanized India: extended families are giving way to nuclear ones, women are joining the work force after school rather than heading straight for marriage, and Western habits like dating are becoming more common. But one bond seems to remain as strong as ever — the doting relationship between Indian mothers and their sons.

Some of this country’s most successful businessmen, politicians and entertainers receive maternal counsel daily — and follow it. For example, some political analysts say they believe that Mrs. Gandhi, a politician herself, is fueling her son’s anti-Muslim views. Matriarchs with little formal business experience sit on the boards of industrial giants. Recently, the country’s highest court even told two tycoon siblings to go to their mother to settle a corporate dispute.

How P&G Finds and Keeps a Prized Workforce – BusinessWeek

Few employers spend as much time cultivating their workforce as Procter & Gamble (PG). The consumer-products company expects to get 400,000 applications for entry-level management positions this year. It will hire less than one half of 1% of them, selecting only those most likely to fit the P&G culture. "We actually recruit for values," says Chief Operating Officer Robert McDonald. "If you are not inspired to improve lives, this isn't the company you want to work for."

The careful vetting, training, and career development pay off. P&G boasts 23 brands with at least $1 billion in annual sales and is the market leader in everything from detergent to diapers to razors. True, the company's renowned marketing skills and deep pockets help. But another important edge is personnel management—bringing in and promoting creative thinkers.

The Mother of All Lists – 600+ Lists On Anything You Can Think Of

Neuroworld » Blog Archive » Under the Pink Light » A True/Slant Contributor

One of my favorite design blogs, Architectures of Control, highlights a new tactic from a residents’ association in England for driving away teenagers: hitting them with pink lights that flag their acne.

    Ouch.

But it works. At least for the time being in a very small spot. (BBC has a short article and a 2-minute video at the link.)

And, it’s not the first anti-teenager device to be implemented (for some reason also in England). There’s also the mosquito, which emits an unpleasant, high-pitched sound that only those under 25 can hear.

And it’s not the only light-based behavior-control measure attempted in Jolly Old England. There’s also this program, which uses blue light to make it harder for heroin users to see their veins in public rest rooms.

Only problem with the bathroom blue lights (other than making junkies miss their veins, which isn’t actually a great thing): It apparently creates great ambiance for sex.

Comparisons Between Most Popular Theme Frameworks

Developing a WordPress theme from the ground up is a big task. Sure it might not take long to throw up the basics, but there are a lot of small details that can go into a site. Frameworks are a tool to make developing a theme easier and quicker. Their not something that everyone needs to use, but it’s an option for people. However, getting going in this field can be confusing. The theme development community has some issues to get through and it really messes up some ideas about what is what.
