In a research paper entitled "Effort for Payment: A Tale of Two Markets," James Heyman and Dan show that people are willing to help move a couch or perform an experiment just by being asked. Moreover, these individuals feel good about their "gift". Most interestingly, the experiments show that contrary to standard economic theory, paying a small incremental incentive does not increase effort, but actually lowers it — because meager compensation profanes the gift effect and disincents the giver.

The high costs of running YouTube. – By Farhad Manjoo – Slate Magazine

Everyone knows that print newspapers are our generation's horse-and-buggy; in the most wired cities, they've been pummeled by competition from the Web. But it might surprise you to learn that one of the largest and most-celebrated new-media ventures is burning through cash at a rate that makes newspapers look like wise investments. It's called YouTube: According a recent report by analysts at the financial-services company Credit Suisse, Google will lose $470 million on the video-sharing site this year alone. To put it another way, the Boston Globe, which is on track to lose $85 million in 2009, is five times more profitable—or, rather, less unprofitable—than YouTube. All so you can watch this helium-voiced oddball whenever you want.

The 10 Biggest Minutes of Your Interview – Career Advice Article

"Hiring managers often know whether they might hire someone soon after the opening handshake and small talk," a new survey suggests. Executives polled said it takes them just 10 minutes to form an opinion of job seekers, despite meeting with staff-level applicants for 55 minutes and management-level candidates for 86 minutes, on average. Lifehacker – Geek to Live: Securely track your passwords – Downloads

Are your passwords written down on a piece of paper taped to the bottom of your keyboard? Zipped up in a passworded archive? Stowed away in a passwords.doc file?

On Wednesday we discussed how to choose secure and memorable passwords. But what about the passwords you already have? Or passwords that were assigned to you that you can't change? Or passwords for systems with special requirements that your usual password scheme doesn't work for?

Sometimes you just have to write down a password to remember it. But don't do it on a Post-It note. You can keep a secure and searchable database to retrieve those hard to remember passwords without compromising security using the free, open source software application KeePass.
