What do you get when you cross scholarly research and dick jokes? Nothing to laugh at, normally. But science writer Jim Holt defies the Heisenberg principle of humor — you can't study it without killing it — in his book Stop Me If You've Heard This: A History and Philosophy of Jokes. We caught up with him walking into a bar.

Now, ripping DVDs is our great challenge. Copying and transcoding the disc’s video into more efficient formats involves math an order of magnitude scarier than what’s required to rip audio CDs. A machine that will rip the latest Miley Cyrus CD in mere moments could take hours to extract and convert your copy of Alien vs. Predator to an iPod-friendly format. But with the right software, a quad-core-equipped PC, and a little know-how, you can cut your disc-rip time from hours to 30 minutes. Plenty of tricks and traps still await first-time rippers, but we’ll show you the basics and then walk you through some of the most valuable power-user ripping secrets.
Deploying it in a corporate environment. Don’t just approve the update through WSUS or allow your users to get the update through Windows Update. The main issue here is InPrivate surfing. This is a function, new in IE8, that allows users to browse websites without leaving traces on the local computer. That is great when you’re using IE8 at home but it’s not something I want my users to use. It will ruin my chain of evidence since whatever I find on my proxy or packet trace can never be tied to the workstation (and subsequently the user).
a) check out the IEAK (Internet Explorer Administration Kit). This tool will allow you to create an installer package that installs IE8 just as you want it.
b) Use these recommendations to block InPrivate surfing.
c) Update the inetres.adm files (these contain group policy settings for IE8) in Active Directory.
d) If you decided that you don’t want to roll out IE8, use the blocker toolkit.
System administrators might want to limit the use of external USB flash drives by making them read only. This can actually be useful in several situations like preventing users from copying local data to the external device or preventing malicious software from spreading on a computer network using those flash drives.
The Windows operating system has a Registry setting that can add USB write protection to a computer system. It is like a switch that can be enabled to make use of the write protection or disabled to allow write processes.
Users who experience problems writing to USB devices might want to take a look at this setting as well if they have the proper rights to do so to see if it is the cause for their difficulties.
Unfortunately, this plan fell short for many reasons. First of all, a user who bought a computer with Windows 95 preinstalled would have bypassed the training session. You can't trust the OEM to have gone through the training, because OEMs change suppliers constantly depending on who gave them the best deal that week, and it's entirely likely that on the floor of the warehouse are a mix of both styles of floppy drive. And you certainly don't want to make the user go through this training session when they unpack their computer on Christmas morning. "Thank you for using Window 95. Before we begin, please insert a floppy disk in drive A:." You can't just try to figure out what type of drive the user has by comparing the clever technique against the boring "turn on the floppy drive light and make grinding noises" technique, at least not without displaying a warning to the user that you're about to do this—users tend to freak out when the floppy drive light turns on for no apparent reason.
