10 things to learn from the almighty WWW today:

How Science Fiction Found Religion by Benjamin A. Plotinsky, City Journal Winter 2009

There is a young man, different from other young men. Ancient prophecies foretell his coming, and he performs miraculous feats. Eventually, confronted by his enemies, he must sacrifice his own life—an act that saves mankind from calamity—but in a mystery as great as that of his origin, he is reborn, to preside in glory over a world redeemed. Tell this story to one of the world’s 2 billion Christians, and he’ll recognize it instantly. Tell it to a science-fiction and fantasy fan, and he’ll ask why you’re making minor alterations to the plot of The Matrix or Superman Returns.

20+ Top Free Windows Mobile Applications

iPhone this, iPod Touch that, BlackBerry and Google Android apps galore, but where is the Windows Mobile love? Well, it is certainly not to be forgotten as the Samsung i770, HTC Touch Pro and Samsung Omnia are all being sold in stores this December, and all of them are powered by Windows Mobile. With those users in mind, here are over 20 top free apps to get the most out of the Windows Mobile operating system.

Pen-testing Tools for the Pocket PC

As some of you may know I run a website with information on using the Sharp Zaurus PDA as a Pen-testing tool. Since the Zaurus runs Linux, porting over security apps meant to run on a Linux PC is pretty simple. But what about the other, more popular side of the fence, the Microsoft Pocket PC (usually abbreviated PPC)? Unfortunately the choice of good pen-testing tools for Pocket PC is pretty limited. Your best bet if you want to use your PPC device as a Pen-testing tool is to see if you can find a distribution of Linux that supports your model and install it, forgoing the PPC/Windows Mobile/WinCE.net OS entirely[0]. With those caveats stated, let's dive into what tools are out there that would be useful to the mobile pen-tester. I'll concentrate on free tools since I have no budget and abhor the idea of paying for a tool that does a worse job than an Open Source alternative running on a Linux/PC platform.

Plan Like an Entrepreneur – Rita McGrath – HarvardBusiness.org

In large corporations, plans and the use of plans is often symptomatic of deeply dysfunctional behavior when it comes to operating under uncertainty. Plans are often simply devices to persuade those who have resources to hand them over. The measure of the goodness of a plan, likewise, is how close the projections came to being 'right.' Honestly, does that make any sense in an environment in which no one knows what tomorrow holds, let alone a 3-year business plan?

Further, in large corporations, it is entirely possible to get enough resources to run a project for quite some time before anybody goes back and checks the assumptions in the plan. You can be wildly off-base and exposed to substantial risks before the program gets reined in.

Foreign Policy: The Long Legs of the Crash: 13 Unexpected Consequences of the Financial Crisis

Last year had more than its share of vertigo-inducing headlines: major banks suddenly disappearing, the Dow plunging day after day, and billion-dollar bailouts failing to make a dent in the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.

Already, the Wall Street way of life seems to have gone the way of the dodo. An entire country—are you reading this, Iceland?—went belly up overnight. And good luck if your last job title was “mortgage-backed securities trader.” But if there are some predictable economic hardships we can expect from the current crisis, there are also some trickle-down effects that aren’t so foreseeable. Here, 13 surprising consequences of the crash:

    Writespace – Home

Writespace is a fullscreen writing environment, developed with WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) as a ClickOnce installed add-in for Word 2007 . Unfortunately Codeplex cannot host ClickOnce applications, so to install the add-in you will have to download and run the installer locally until I've found a site to host it.

Writespace is inspired by Dark Room (http://they.misled.us/dark-room) for Windows and Write Room (http://www.hogbaysoftware.com/product/writeroom) for OS X. One advantage of Writespace is the built in spellcheck support (English, French, Spanish and German).

    Robert Scoble To Leave FastCompany

Super-blogger Robert Scoble is leaving his full time job at FastCompany, he confirmed by phone tonight. He first joined the company nearly a year ago and has been running their FastCompany.tv site. He says he’ll continue to write a column for the magazine, but his video work with them is over.
