Religulous is a comedy documentary about religion and it was released in the year 2008. With such title, you know for sure that you’ll not see this documentary on Discovery, National Geographic or The History channels. This show is definitely not for everyone. You need to watch it with a pinch of salt; don’t take everything on this show seriously. It is just for fun. Though at times, you may start thinking; holy crap – is this correct?
I find this documentary – funny & ironic. Bill Maher sarcasm is good. That’s it. This show does not make me doubt my faith / believes in religion / God. I believe, many of us have unanswered “logical” questions or doubts when it comes to religion.
Depending on the way you look at it, fortunately or unfortunately we accept religion as it is – blindly and faithfully. And Bill Maher is on the mission to find this answer as presented in Religulous. There’s no concrete conclusion at the end of the show. You’ll have good laughs watching Religulous. You will definitely give it a thought or two on most of the rational questions raised in Religulous. Heck, you’ll even learn a thing or two. For example, the Egypt God – Horus.
Born of a virgin, Isis. Only begotten son of the God Osiris. Birth heralded by the star Sirius, the morning star. Ancient Egyptians paraded a manger and child representing Horus through the streets at the time of the winter solstice (about DEC-21). In reality, he had no birth date; he was not a human. Death threat during infancy: Herut tried to have Horus murdered. Handling the threat: The God That tells Horus’ mother “Come, thou goddess Isis, hide thyself with thy child.” An angel tells Jesus’ father to: “Arise and take the young child and his mother and flee into Egypt.” Break in life history: No data between ages of 12 & 30. Age at baptism: 30. Subsequent fate of the baptiser: Beheaded. Walked on water, cast out demons, healed the sick, restored sight to the blind. Was crucifed, descended into Hell; resurrected after three days.
The show centers mainly around Christianity (most of it), Judaism and Islam. There’s also brief mentions of Hinduism, Greek Gods, Egypt Gods etc. Religion is a sensitive and personal matter to all believers / worshipers. If you enjoy stand up comedies of George Carlin; you’ll have no problem with Religulous. However, if you only enjoy stand up comedies of Bill Cosby; skip this show.
Me? I’ll strongly recommend this show to anyone who is in the search for a good laugh. I enjoyed this show because of it’s humor, sarcasm and great conversation such as this:
Bill Maher: If Santa Claus can hit every house in the world.
Steve Berg: No, we don’t believe in Santa Claus.
Bill Maher: Of course not, that’s one man flying all around the world and dropping presents down a chimney. One man hearing everybody murmer at him at the same time, that I get.
I know that I’m not a movie critic, but I’ll give this show 8 out of 10.
i loved this show!! "George W. Bush: I believe that God wants everybody to be free. That's what I believe. And that's uh, been part of my... foreign policy. "
Love that quote too. This movie is full of memorable conversation / quote. I also love this part:
Bill Maher: See, this is my problem, is, I'm trying - I mean, you're - you're a Senator. You are one of the very few people who are really running this country. It worries me that people are running my country who think - who believe in a talking snake. Um...
Senator: You don't have to pass an IQ test to be in the Senate, though.
