  • Marginal Revolution: How do airplanes float on water? – All airplanes will eventually sink if it is in water, even pressurized planes. (more on that later) But there are several areas in the airplane that have pockets of air that help keep the plane afloat. For example, in the area between the outside skin of the fuselage and the interrior there is a space that is usually insulated and has air that needs to be displaced by the water. In most airplanes built today, the wing is the fuel tank, and since water is heavier than fuel the fuel in the wings help offset some of the weight of the plane…not a lot but some.

  • How to Remove False Libelous Info About Yourself Online | MakeUseOf.com – Bloggers are usually well aware of the dangers of being accused of libel, and that’s why most independent online journalists are very careful to make sure that everything they write about someone on their blog is backed with documentation and evidence. But when someone writes something libelous about you, you need to be well prepared to fight back hard.
  • Twitter Power 150 – Todd Andrlik created the Power150 Ranking, now run by Advertising Age, featuring the top English-language media and marketing blogs in the world. With ranking and authority in Twitter causing quite a discussion a few weeks back, i decided nonetheless to have a shot and create the Twitter Power 150, based on the original ranking.

With over 800 bloggers it would be really hard to track down all the twitter profiles, so i focused on the top 300 and with the help of Twitterank and Dapper, and partly inspired by Mack Collier’s Top 25 Marketing & Social Media Blogs, here’s the January 2009 list for the top 150 twitter users with advertising and marketing blogs:

  • What Everybody Ought to Know About Posing for Portraits – “Do you have any tips on posing for portraits?”

This question hit my inbox earlier in the week and I shot the reader back a few links to tutorials that we’ve written on the topic of posing for portraits. I thought that the list of posts might be useful to others too so have included it here:

  • Organ Grinder: Top 10 viral ads of 2008 | Media | guardian.co.uk – Some ads are so memorable that it takes just one reference to immediately recall their brilliance. Wassssuuup?, for example.

Budweiser's excellent ad from the turn of the century featured a group of mates "watching the game, having a Bud" and hilariously sharing the catchphrase Wassup.

Eight years later the director of the original, Charles Stone III, reunited the characters to create an ad for Obama's presidential campaign.

The ad, which has taken the title of most popular online advertisement of the year, features the characters in dire circumstances, such as being posted to Iraq and the stock market crash, since we last saw them in 2000. Genius.

See below for the rest of the Top 10 including Diesel's 30th anniversary risqué Safe For Work soft porn viral, Guy Ritchie's TV ad for Nike and Tiger Wood's "Jesus Shot" viral.

  • Be Careful What You Post | The Home of Peter Shankman – Shankman.com – This particular Twitter posting came back to bite the agency person from Ketchum (New York office) who made some unflattering remarks about Memphis this morning before he presented on digital media to the worldwide communications group at FedEx (150+) people. Not only did an employee find it, they were totally offended by it and responded to the agency person. The kicker is that they copied the FedEx Coporate Vice President, Vice President, Directors and all management of FedEx’s communication department AND the chain of command at Ketchum. Mr. Andrews, the Ketchum presenter, did not take into account that many FedExers are native Memphians and are feircely defensive of their city and their company.
  • Change Your Resume for a Great 2009 – Part I – Stepcase Lifehack – 2009 will be a time of change. Included in those changes for many will be a job change. In tight economic times, job search skills become even more important. You need to stand out from the crowd.

There are two ways to stand out. You will stand out if you do things that make you look ridiculous, and you will stand out by doing things that make you look remarkable. Ridiculous or remarkable: both cause you to stand out, but one gets you the job and one doesn’t.

Naturally then, you hope to be seen as remarkable. That means you need to create a remarkable resume; remarkable, but not ridiculous. This three-part series will help you prepare a remarkable resume.

  • 15 Ways to Set Yourself Apart in a Recession | Online College – Recessions aren’t fun for anyone. But they do provide some unique opportunities.

If you’re looking for a job during a recession, how do you stand out, further your career? The process isn’t all that different than at any other time, except that there should be emphasis on certain activities. With all the competition you’ll probably have for positions, you need to stand out amongst candidates.

The tips provided below, in two categories, might apply to one or more of the following career modes:

  • How I Look at Resumes | Redfin Corporate Blog – Now when a friend sends over a resume for proofreading, which happens nearly every week these days, I remember how completely defenseless I felt at that moment.

Resumes are horrible documents, premature and unsentimental obituaries: our lives are rarely reduced to such a small number of facts. And writing a resume is a balancing act between feeling outrageously boastful and unimpressive. Some, like Seth Godin, have questioned whether you should even have a resume. I know many people who take whatever dreadful job happens their way just to avoid writing one.

That’s silly. No one has much experience preparing a resume, but it isn’t that hard: you just have to get out of the way of yourself so your accomplishments can speak for themselves. Having reviewed thousands of resumes, I now have a better idea of what the folks in Kafka’s Castle like to see:

  • “Be Nice to the Countries That Lend You Money” – In his first interview since the world financial crisis, Gao Xiqing, the man who oversees $200 billion of China’s $2 trillion in dollar holdings, explains why he’s betting against the dollar, praises American pragmatism, and wonders about enormous Wall Street paychecks. And he has a friendly piece of advice:
