I came across an article in Options, The Edge for The Week of March 2, 2009, page 21, Slow Drive Through Western Australia. In the article, Y S Khong, wrote,
I now have bragging rights to having tasted a Wagyu steak at A$98 for 200 grams.
I remember my friend told me about this Wagyu steak. 2 things fascinated me the most of this Wagyu steak.
The cows are massaged.
The cows are fed beers / sake.
Yes, you read it right – beers / sake. The cows are fed beers / sake. There’s an explanation behind this. According to Wikipedia,
It is suggested that this was done to aid in digestion and induce hunger during humid seasons but appears to have no effect on the meat’s flavor. Massaging may have been to prevent muscle cramping on small farms in Japan in which the animals did not have sufficient room to use their muscles.
Oh yes, you read it right. Cow, beers, sake and massages.
Fortunately, if you are recession-proof, you can enjoy the Wagyu steak in Malaysia. As far as I know, it is available at The Prime Steak Restaurant, Le Meridian, Kuala Lumpur. I’ve never tasted it nor have any plan tasting it anywhere in the future because I’m a Hindu. Cows are sacred for the Hindus – it applies even if the cows are drunk.
Yes, those cows get massage and fed beers / sake – before they are slaughtered and served on the plate.
Wagyu Steak – what so special about it?
